After listening to their latest offering, Fate Is Your Muse, they’re not wrong. Prepare To Die is the album opener and gives you a taste of what you’re in store for…riffs, riffs and more riffs. If this is what preparing to die feels like, I’m cool with it. Second track Wearin’ You Down is the musical equivalent of a seedy strip club with dirty grinding riffs and gravel soaked vocals. The riffs continue with Ten Lizardmen and One Pocketknife, a slightly more metal track than the album openers. No bad thing. Showing the diversity of Devil to Pay comes Yes Master, a nod to the more progressive side of rock. Already Dead takes us back to hard rock, reminiscent of Black Stone Cherry’s sound. This Train Won’t Stop is mistitled. It should have been called This Riff Won’t Stop. Halfway through the album and no signs of a weak song. Savonarola carries on this trend. Black Black Heart slows the pace down slightly (relatively speaking) highlighted with some short but most definitely sweet guitar solos. Light on drums, heavy on riffs and bass. The Naked Truth is soaked in classic hard rock before we return to the world of metal with Mass Psychosis which is definitely the most “metal” sounding on the album and wouldn’t sound out of place on Metallica’s St Anger. If St Anger had been good. Tie One On takes us right back to rock. This is probably the lightest track on the album and makes you want to get your groove on. Fate Is Your Muse comes to a close with Beyond The Ether, a doomy sounding track. I personally would have placed this earlier on in the album and this track is the only reason this album doesn’t get full marks. It’s not a bad track, it just sounds a little out of place as an album closer. Score: 4.5/5 Devil To Pay are southern hard rock with a sprinkling of sludgy sleaze for good measure, a complete rollercoaster of riffage. I feel the need to go and dance round a pole. Fate Is Your Muse is the soundtrack to every seedy strip club you ever wanted to go to.
