Blackangelpromotions.com review of "Cash is King" Posted: 10-24-06 Reviewer: Black Angel Devil To Pay is one of the better Rock bands to come out of Indiana that I've heard in some time. The band has just released their sophomore disc entitled Cash Is King. And don't be fooled into thinking the title is an ode to Johnny Cash because it isn't, at least I don't hear Cash in any of the music presented here. The only thing the band has in common with Cash is the sincerity of their lyrical content. DTP is a Stoner Rock monster that can be compared to Sabbath, Kyuss, COC, Pentagram and Soundgarden! It's not a secret that I'm not a big fan of Stoner Rock, but I can't help but like DTP. The band just knows how to write some damned good tunes. Whether you like this kind of music or you don't, matters not, it still deserves much admiration and respect. From a guitarists' stand point, Cash Is King is an open book on the do's and don't of Heavy Rock guitar playing, you could stand to learn alot from all the killer riffs that are packed on this cd. It should also help to improve your sound and tone as a player because there's a shitstorm of crunch here. Hell, right now I can't hear myself think because of it and I don't care. The rest of the band does an extravagant job here as well in using a plethora of breakdowns and alot of different techniques and time measurements to make the tunes more powerful and heavy. Vocally, it's not a bad deal here, either. There's no growling or screeching and thankfully no effects used on the vocal tracks. It's all soulful rhythm and blues which is what makes the world go round in Rock music. The only thing that may throw some listeners off is the length of a few of the tunes, while they're not ten minutes long, they do hit the five and six minute mark on more than a few occasions. At any length, you'll probably forget about it once you've heard the tunes "Born To Rue", "Shake Hands With Death", "Niflheim", "Ripped From Your Womb" and "The Mountain Comes To Me". If you're into heavy guitar sounds reminiscent of Kim Thayil and Tony Iommi, you'll be doing yourself a favor by checking out Devil To Pay. |
