Indystar Article May 4th, 2013 15 years of Indianapolis music coverage To commemorate, a list of 25 favorite Hoosier tunes May 4, 2013 Written by David Lindquist I started writing about music for The Indianapolis Star on May 4, 1998. Fifteen years ago, I listened to Ed Wenck and Dave O'Brien work the morning shift at WRZX-FM (103.3). I recall a funny bit that turned Radiohead’s “Karma Police” into “Carmel Police.” That night, I caught Hoosier rock band the Mysteries of Life at Broad Ripple's Patio nightclub. The band was preparing an album, “Come Clean,” for major-label RCA Records, and I interviewed vocalist-guitarist Jake Smith at nearby restaurant Mezzaluna before the show. So ... Mezzaluna is now a Noodles and Company, Jake Smith teaches at Northwestern University, the Mysteries broke up, the Patio has been replaced by hookah bar Lava, Ed Wenck recently transitioned from on-air radio work to advertising radio work and Dave O’Brien works the morning shift at country station WLHK-FM (97.1). Gratefully, I continue to write about entertainment for The Star. Last night, I caught Hoosier rock band Hero Jr. at the First Friday Food Truck Festival at Old National Centre. Inspired by Hero Jr.’s “Anne Boleyn” — one of the best songs in recent memory — I put together a list of 25 favorites by Indiana acts from the past 15 years: >> Chamberlain, “Try for Thunder.” >> The Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band with Jason Webley, “Two Bottles of Wine.” >> Hero Jr., “Anne Boleyn.” >> Mudkids, “Another Journey.” >> The Slurs, “It Just Gets Worse.” >> Sindacato, “Sometime After Two.” >> Cara Jean Wahlers, “Black Dog.” >> Stereo Deluxe, “Bomber Jacket.” >> Extra Blue Kind, “Make Yourself Useless.” >> The Elms, “Nothin’ to do with Love.” >> Otis Gibbs, “I Wanna Change It.” >> The Pieces, “Soda Machine.” >> Loretta, “1000 lbs.” >> Devil to Pay, “Tractor Trailer.” >> Tiara Thomas, “Popular.” >> Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s, “Broad Ripple is Burning.” >> America Owns the Moon, “Freakout.” >> Some Girls, “Launch Pad.” >> Jennie DeVoe, “Butterfly.” >> Murder By Death, “As Long as There’s Whiskey in the World.” >> Red Light Driver, “Mission Airy.” >> Blueprintmusic, “Deathbed.” >> We Are Hex, “Birthplace of the Mystics.” >> Grampall Jookabox, “Let’s Go Mad Together.” >> The Fuglees, “Where Is David Lee Roth?” |
