Devil To Pay - Thirty Pieces of Silver
by Rev. Psycho Matthias

The Lowdown: This CD fuckin' rocks! It's a rarity when a band can release a CD that you can listen to from start to finish repeatedly. Indy's own Devil To Pay is now one of those bands with their debut release, Thirty Pieces of Silver. I just love how the guitars sound so huge and in-your-face, in the guise of well-executed Black Sabbath-meet-Kyuss riffs played by Steve Janiak and Rob Secrist. You just have to love the sound of SGs amplified by overdriven Marshall and Orange amps and if you do not, well, you are tone deaf and have no taste.

Guitar tones alone do not make a good CD. Steve Janiak's vocals remind me of a ballsier John Garcia (Kyuss), while his guitar leads are very tasteful and fitting. The grooves that bassist Matt Stokes and drummer Chad Prifogle lay down are par excellence, contributing to the overall flow from song to song. You will not find any fuzz-laden space jams here. All eleven tracks are solid, heavy ROCK songs that kick your ass right away and do not drag for days on end. If I had to choose favorites, I would pick the instrumental "Mouthful of Spite" (Track 1), "Dinosaur Steps" (Track 3), the push track "Tractor Fuckin' Trailer" (Track 6), "The New Black" (Track 7) and "Toreador" (Track 10). There is not a weak moment to be found anywhere. If you're looking for good music to hear on a roadtrip or a keg party, I highly recommend Thirty Pieces of Silver by Devil To Pay.
