Metalgospel.org review of 'thirty pieces' DEVIL TO PAY - Thirty Pieces Of Silver (Benchmark Records~2003) This band from Indiana, USA is really cool ! They were formed in 2002 and a year later offer their debut full length of excellent Stoner / Doom / Rock / Metal, whatever you want to call it, at least you must call it Heavy because that´s just what it is. Tons of weighty grooves, standout, thick riffage and lots of great distortions will hit you head on while rhythms chug along at mostly midtempo and pound in your ears, slowly making you give in to their addicting melodies and hooks. The songs are simplistic yet catchy and quite infectious, several key elements of a successfull album. The drumming really helps tie everything together in a nice, tight but easily flowing package and featured here is some GREAT guitar soloing. The first bands that come to mind when hearing these guys are 90s era CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, HIGH ON FIRE or KYUSS. Vocalist, Steve Janiak, sounds like a great crossing of Pepper Keenan (COC), John Garcia (KYUSS) and Layne Staley (ALICE IN CHAINS). Recommended tracks: the slow paced 'The New Black', excellent instrumental opener 'Mouthful Of Spite', and the very groovy 'Swathe'. -Cheryl |
