Logo-magazine.com review of "thirty pieces"

3 & 1/2 stars
The cross-genre pollination between stoner rock and doom metal is gathering pace to such an extent that pretty soon there’ll be either nothing to differentiate them or we’ll have whole new genre. The odds are, with the likes of Indianapolis’ Devil To Pay, the latter is more likely. Though easily pigeonholed as either/or, these instances occur in moments, and butt up against each other in the space of seconds, as though there’s an unheard discussion going on wherein each side briefly gains the upper hand. Directing the battle are Steve Janiak’s John Garcia-esque vocals, negotiating a field where solos are alternately simple and convoluted, and riffs thick and powerful. Such is their belief in their musicianship that they make the point by introducing themselves with an instrumental, yet they’ve only been a functioning for little over a year. Looking for touchstones? Think Black Sabbath, Alabama Thunderpussy and Masters Of Reality chugging on JD and peyote.
