Stanford University Radio KZSU DJ Review of 'thirty pieces' Ragnar of Ravensfjord Reviewed 2004-07-18 Yep, it’s more stoner rock. More of that (now very overdone) Nebula/Kyuss sound though interestingly they occasionally sound like Trouble or Blind Dog at their worst they sound like well...a really bad AOR version of “Stoner Rock” (TM) or 70’s boogie mating with some 70’s pre-metal hard rock or even (ugh!) a “Stoner rocK Alice In Chains”. So when these guys are good they’re pretty good but when they’re bad they’re REALLY baaad! (((1))) Sounds like a leftover from several Nebula albums. Jammin’ instrumental. ((((2)))) Awesome doom/70’s heavy rocker ‘ala Trouble mixed with Soul Caravan. ((3)) Good riffing but the vocals hit too close to Alice In Chains for it to save this sinking ship. ((4)) Slow-ass Sabbath-like riff running at about 10 mph. Gets sort of in Blind Dog territory but mostly stays in Sucksville in the vocal dept. (5) Ugh! Mid-tempo Led Zeppelin thudding with A.i.C/ vocals! I was thinking he was gonna break out in a refrain of “Man in the Box” Make it stop....NOW! 6 Jud-jud-jud-jud riff that’s one at least 4 albums with Phil Anselmo and this is so nose deep in shit I wouid’ve actually preferred an Anselmo-style vocal track on here. Dudes, this is KZSU not KSJO! 7. Hey it’s almost a Melvins riff...I said almost! I’m not even done with this album and (minus track #2) I’m wishing they would’ve stayed an instrumental band. 8. Slowed down riffing that sounds like fuckin Nirvana, no really this is something like early Nirvana crossed with Kyuss. Is it 1994 or 2004? ((9)) OK, back to some decent riffing. Swampy, Sabbath/Kyuss/Nebula thing going on here. Oh wait, “Mr. Rock God” just started singing... ((10)) Good riffing but again the “Intense guy who really, really wants to be on MTV2” fucks it up again. Though for generic heavy rock this ain’t 1/2 bad. (at least on this one). 11. Slow, early 90’s bullshit “grunge” by way of “stoner rock”. “Yeah...the devil’s comin’ back”. There’s almost a much devil on this album than as there is the word “fuck” in a Zakk Wylde interview. D.T.P. you need to either make an EP, get a new vocalist or go all instrumental. |
